The Value of the Land reflects one of the most grave situations confronting rural Mexico today: the depredation of fields caused by the buying and selling of communal land between businesses and farmers. Basilio is a peasant who refuses to sell his land in a Yucata\u0301n town, in which most of his peers have already sold.
