People have stopped praying in Tenejapa. The elderly, those who know the traditions well, are no longer taken into account. Alonso Santis López is one of the few who still pray in the traditional manner in service of his town. His job consists of praying to gods for the bankilales (older brothers) and watching over people’s lives. During the Carnival, a ritual that ushers in the New Year as well as the next cycle’s role of the costumbre, we meet El Nail.
